5 minute interview with Tamika, Zoe, Laura and Evanthea of Hayden Marsh
So why the “definitive temp service”?
Tamika: We generally pay our temps more than our competitors, which means they are more loyal to us and therefore to our clients. This means we provide a better class of temp who has the right approach and attitude to a role. This, in turn, means our clients are happy and the candidate stands a better chance of getting a permanent role.
Zoe: The feedback I receive is that our temps are particularly fond of our holiday pay process. We obviously tell them they accrue 28 days of holiday per annum by law, but the difference with Hayden Marsh is that we don’t incorporate the holiday pay into their general pay. This means they actually get paid get paid on top of their hourly rate for their holiday, and we provide an update on how much holiday they have accrued each week so there is total transparency.
Laura: Don’t forget that we offer a discount on a permanent fee for any candidate who has been temping with a client who then offers to take them permanently.
Evanthea: We also recognise temps who work well and achieve agreed goals by awarding prizes for things like Temp of the Month. This helps focus our temps and enables us to reward them for delivering an exceptional temp service on behalf of Hayden Marsh.

OK so what else gives you a claim to offering a better temp service than some of your competitors?
Z: We run our temp service in two ways: firstly, our payroll department prepares all tax, NI and WTD calculations and is available every working day and some weekends. This means we can ask for amendments or deal with queries instantly, minimising the usual bureaucracy so that a temp can get an answer to anything, quickly. This creates a happy temp, which is better for our client and for us.
T: Secondly, we run a factoring service with our bank. This means we can deal with multiple temp contracts without any issues over volume. In fact our busiest week for temps was 187 in late 2008. The admin necessary for this volume of temps is controlled by our in house Resourcer, who liaises directly with our payroll department on pay run day.
L: Yes and our pay run day is Tuesday, when we generate all payslips, send them out by email as we don’t like to use paper unnecessarily, and action payments. Usually, payments hit their bank accounts by the Thursday following submittal of the timesheet, Friday latest.
“..our busiest week for temps was 187 in the latter part of August 2008”
How many temps do have out at any one time?
T: Anywhere from 60 to 180 a week. It fluctuates according to our clients’ needs. Crucially, we deal with relatively large numbers of weekly temps in larger companies where our clients trust us to pay our temporary workers precisely and promptly, whilst also maintaining good relations between us, the candidate and them.
Z: We organise a lot of multiple temp contracts with Oxfordshire based companies. These clients expect high standards from their recruiters and our policy of being detailed and transparent seems to work very well.
L: I started off as a temp actually at Hayden Marsh so I know they do it well and I actually became part of their permanent team as I enjoy the work culture and levels of professionalism and normality.

What about the law when it comes to temps?
T: In terms of the rights and responsibilities of Hayden Marsh and, from that, our clients and candidates, we keep abreast of all relevant updates on employment law through our full membership of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) http://www.rec.uk.com/home and our local business contacts at law firms like Brook Street des Roches and Henmans.
What about insurance for your temps?
Z: We have full public and private liability insurance. This means our temps are fully insured when working for one of our clients, though our clients also have their own insurance in the first instance..
I’ve heard about the Temp Guide you provide to all your temps. What’s that?
E: Take a look for yourself here: http://www.haydenmarsh.co.uk/temping-and-contracting/temp-guide/ . This explains the standards we expect from our temps and provides a comprehensive guide to everything from punctuality, dress code, attitude and diligence. Each temp we have acknowledges having read, understood and agreed to abide by these standards, which has resulted in some exceptional feedback from our clients on our testimonial page on our website.
